2nd International Conference on Community Corrections and Social Control was Successfully held by School of Sociology, CCNU

On June 8, 2016, the 2nd International Conference on Community Corrections and Social Control was Successfully held by School of Sociology, CCNU, at the second floor of Yifu International Conference Center.
 

Ms. Huang Xiaomei, CCNU’s Deputy Party Secretary, Ms. Jiang Ning, Director of Justice Bureau of Wuchang District, Prof. Darrell Irwin, Dean of School of Sociology of CCNU, Mr. Wang Jiping, Party Secretary of School of Sociology, Prof. Jiang Lihua, Executive Vice-Dean of School of Sociology of CCNU, Prof. Wan Rende, Vice Dean of Teaching Affairs of School of Sociology of CCNU, and other leaders from both within and outside CCNU attended the opening ceremony of the conference. A number of famous scholars from US, Canada, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China presented at the conference. Prof. Irwin hosted the opening ceremony and introduced attendees of the conference. Ms. Huang Xiaomei and Jiang Ning each made a speech to congratulate and recognize the importance of this conference.


The conference was divided into five sections, which were “Overseas Community Corrections”, “Community Correction Practices”, “Community Corrections of Mainland China”, “Development of Community Corrections”, and “Social Support for Community Corrections”. In the first section, Prof. Jiang Shanhe from Wayne State University presented on the topic of “Community Corrections in the US”, Prof. Chen Xiaobei from Carleton University presented on the topic of “Social Control from the Perspective of Foucault’s Governmentality, Prof. Xu Huafu from Taiwan Chung Cheng University presented on “The Topic and Current Situation of Electronic Monitoring of Community Treatment in Taiwan”, Prof. Zhang Yan from Sam Houston State University presented on “An exploration of Methods in Analyzing Crime and Place: A Combination of Spatial Approach with Multilevel Analysis”, and Prof. Li Liying from Metropolitan State University of Denver presented on the topic of Community Residential Correctional Programs in the US. In the second section, Director Jiang Ning presented on the practice and reflections of community corrections, Dr. Li Wuzhen from Hubei Provincial Public Security Department presented on the study of solution of conflicts occurred after economic crimes, and Prof. Xia Yuzhen from CCNU presented on the topic of “Social governance and Prevention of Juvenile Crimes”.


In the third session which was held in the afternoon, Prof. Liu Chengbin from Huazhong University of Science and Technology presented on the topic “Categorization, Classification and Precise Drug Treatment”, Prof. Zhang Lening from St. Francis University presented on Rural migrants and disorderly behaviors in contemporary urban China, Prof. Sun Yixian from Delaware University presented on The Effects of Job Characteristics on Role and Job Stress Among Chinese Community Correctional Workers, Prof. Wu Yuhong from Shanghai University of Political Science and Law presented on the topic of allocation of Chinese community correction workers, and Ms. Zhang Haoyue from City University of Hong Kong presented on the Review of the Social Capital and Crime Discontinuation Studies of Chinese Rural Teenage Community Correction Offenders.  


Prof. Irwin started the fourth session with a presentation on The Corrosive Cultural Effects of Mass Incarceration in the USA, and it was followed by three graduate students from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, who presented some recent studies on governance and intervention of drug addicts. Prof. Zhang Dawei started the last session with a presentation on “Types and Current Situation of Social Support for Community Correction Offenders”, and it was followed by presentations by four graduate students from CCNU, about related topics.


This year’s conference featured a number of international scholars and government officials whose central goal was to promote community well-being through community corrections. Community corrections studies will be a hot topic in the next few years as societies look to reform criminals and make communities safer. This conference promoted the theoretical development and explained correctional programs both in China and overseas.
