【Teacher’s style】Xu Xiaojun:Treat sochlarship strictly,create bravely-----an exclusive interview to Professor Xu Xiaojun of sociology institution

   “Class participation teaching to develop students’unsupervised learning abilities”,”Open education blogs to let students use educational resources anytime and anywhere.”,”Found class running libraries to encourage students to read”,”Live answering questions on yy Platform”………Professor Xu Xiaojun leaves much deep impression on students.His many kinds of teaching methods can activate the atmosphere of the classes,making students learn and discuss in a relaxing atmosphere,and be strict with students’learning effects simultaneously.For example,social investigation activities make students under much pressure.As the main teacher,he communicates closely with students,and make every effort to plan for and give suggestions on their studies.  

   Professor Xu Xiaojun was born in November,1975.Now he is a professor of sociology institution in Central China Normal University and doctorical tutor.Rural sociology and edged crowd’s social integration are his main researching fields.

 

   Teacher Xu is the main speaker of the course<Social Investigation Researching Method> in the education work for undergraduates in the sociology institution.He has his own education zone on cloud platform,and has his own education blog at 3g.163.com.”Every student can have a good command of investigating this technology.”is on the column named”Recent Resolution” in his blog.In process of teaching the course<Social Investigation Researching Method>,he abandoned the pattern of inoculation in traditional classes,instead,he adopted the pattern with the type of participatory research,making students fully participate in the real social investigations.

 

First:Rigorousness and persistence on the way of chasing the dream

   In September,1994,a teenager carrying a backpack who had a dream came to Central China Normal University.From undergraduate to master and doctor,until staying at school and teaching finally,Teacher Xu has been in the “osmanthus mountain” for 22 years.He always keeps the attitude of treating scholarship strictly on the way of sociology.He used to take part in the national “Challenging Cup” College Students’After-class Academic Works Competition and win the first prize of the whole nation during the postgraduate stage.

   Recalling the situation of staying at school and teaching,Teacher Xu still had a clear memory“At that time,the teacher resource was just not abundant in the new generation.There were only seven or eight frontline teachers left in the institution,Teacher Cai and I stay here teaching as young core teachers.”From teaching assistant to lecturer,until being assessed to be a professor in the end,he think it is very lucky of being a teacher in the sociology family,the first session of students he led impressed him most,they worked in all kinds of fields,and now he still can call every student’s name.

Second:Exploration and creation in teaching methods

   “Clean and straight suit,logically clear teaching content,the teaching method that is easy to understand.”,Teacher Xu ‘s online classes left such impression on students.The teaching videos on cloud platform are provided for students to watch anytime and anywhere,in fact,it needs him to spare no effort to record videos to make such convenient and practical teaching resources.Including Teacher Xu’s painstaking preparation before recording,broadcasting group’s subtitle making,later cutting,technological support and so on.

   Teacher Xu was asked”Do you have any unique methods in class teaching?”,”I feel there aren’t unique methods in teaching,instead,it is only because I dare to strive and do.The university just invest much in education.Multimedia teaching,bilingual teaching and CAI program assisting teaching have been gradually popularized since 2001,and till online classes’construction,teaching researching project,ABC classes’construction,inverted classroom,inquiry teaching and so on.I dare to participate in the first batch in every popularization of revolutionary experiment of projects and methods”,”A saying has it that’You can achieve anything if you are concentrated’,teaching is bound to be done well if you are concentrated.”he answered.Teacher Xu also participated in the online classes’construction in the first batch during the popularization of online classes that has been on recent years.

 

   Every student who has ever taken social investigation classes knows that,besides teaching videos,a great number of social investigation report samples,questionnaire design samples,formation requirements,great works of students in history and so on have been handed in in the “Expanded Resources” part.These expanded resources can meet the needs of students from different levels.In the design of classwork,according to the order of the questionnaire,he arrange topic selection,samples’choosing  and design,questionnaire design,investigation action,and investigation report writing in the end,in process of finishing the homework,students put the theories learned in classes to actual social investigation,thus improving learning effects.  

Third:Strict Requirement on learning effect

   Besides daring to do and strive in the exploration and creation of teaching methods,Teacher Xu is also strict about students’learning effects.Students ask him anytime about the problems that they met in online classes or traditional classes,ensuring to have a good command of every knowledge point.Additionally,after collecting some common problems among students,he will answer the questions unifiedly.He could have voice answering online after students signing in YY voice platform and entering the channel he created.

   Secondly,Teacher Xu is strict about homework effect,homework takes up a great percentage of daily grades,Student Chen in Teacher Xu’s class said”After handing in the homework,Teacher Xu also made some endorsements,and asked some students to give the homework to him to have a look after correcting.”Many students’homework was corrected again after being handed in,and format mistakes also need to be corrected carefully.In order to finish the investigation practice task,students allocated the tasks independently,give away questionaires in the classes of all kinds of institutions,contact with the teachers who had classes,adjust the time with each other.Students felt that although it was tough,they had learned many things that couldn’t be learned in classes.

   Once,Teacher Xu saw that a student complaint in the QQ zone about not sleeping well for a few days in order to finish the social investigation tasks,he made screenshots for us to have a look,playing a joke that being busy with studying was exactly what condition university students shouldn have,but he also reminded us that we should care about balancing work and rest,if we pay more efforts in daily study,we will have much less pressure of end-of-term homework.

Fourth:Study planning and tutoring for students

   As the main teacher of Class 4,Period 2013,in sociology institution,Teacher Xu also has a deep feeling of working as a main teacher,”From my perspective,it doesn’t need much time to do work as a main teacher well,students have strong independence after entering the university,they have been adults,and we shouldn’t manage students like a nanny,what a main teacher should do mainly is to plan study for students,and do some tutoring in this part.”Teacher Xu talked for two hours in the first meeting with students of Period 2013,telling everyone important time points and selections during the whole university career,and tell clearly about relationship between advantages and disadvantages in postgraduate examinations,postgraduate ensurance,employment obtaining,certificate examinations and minor fields, students can inquire Teacher Xu when a time point arrives,thus doing some pre-praparations.Teacher Xu said what impressed him most is that several freshmen have so rare science researching awareness that they have started applying for the “Training Plan to Innovation and Enterprise of University Students”.Teacher Xu stressed that the main responsibility of the main teacher is to plan study,and he also should care about and tutor students mentally and in their lives,of course.

   Finally,when it came to expectations for students in sociology institution,Teacher Xu said”As for learning the subject of sociology,what people in society agree most is methods of sociology,so social investigation method is one of the core competitivenesses of sociology,what I expect is that everyone can have a good command of social investigation and researching methods.”
