An academic lecture themed on “Openness and Crossness” was held in Yifu International Conference Center (F1) of Central China Normal University at 10 a.m. on September 29th, 2016. It was our great honor to have Professor Xu Huafu, an expert in criminology from National Chung Cheng University as our lecturer. The 20th academic lecture organized by the Humanity and Science Higher Institute on “the Development of Big Data and Its Applications in Crime Prevention”.

Professor Xu specializes in criminology, penology and punishment law. He has 12 research programmes sponsored by Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology, and he has published more than 50 relevant papers on certain renowned journals. His lectures including “Sex and Crime”, “Criminalization of the Disadvantaged Groups”, “Crime and Geography” are well-received among the attendees and hiswork Vagrants among the Disadvantaged Groups appeals to the reading public most. At the beginning of lecture, Professor Xu demonstrated some pictures of the picturesque National Chung Cheng University at the foot of Ali mountain before he showed black swans, the school mascot. He also sincerely welcomed our students to Chung Cheng University for study or sightseeing. By introducing the meaning of big data and its predictable functions in our daily life, he pointed out the big data would be used more widely than ever before as our life resources become increasingly diversified and complicated. And he held that governments would attach more and more significance to the application of big data.
Professor Xu introduced the application of big data in detail later. Disease prevention, transportation, health care, supervision and administration and humanitarian were included. He thought if we really want to realize the use of big data in real life, it is necessary for government to gain accessible data and open data to the public. At the same time, he also introduced us some specific applications of big data in the field of crime, such as criminal activity real-time detection online , prediction and monitoring in the form of crime place pictures and videos, these applications have played a big role in maintaining social security .Then, he put forward the potential challenges and dangers of big data ,such as the decline of traditional expert authority, big data talent training gap, personal privacy violation as well as the threat caused by national security damage.
At the end of the lecture, professor Xu showed the beautiful scenery of four seasons in a year at National Chung Cheng University，and he also presented positive interaction with teachers and students at present. In the question session, the students took an active part in asking professor Xu the subject they were interested in, and professor Xu gave explanations in detail patiently, the teachers and students gained a lot through the conference. Finally, the conference concluded as a big success.
