At 16:30 on November 25, 2016, the final of Hubei province 2nd social work practice case was held on the first floor of Yifu International Convention Center of CCNU. The final attracted the attention of all sectors of society. Tan Fangming, the vice president of Hubei Social Association, and Professor Huang Xiaomei, the deputy secretary of the party committee of Central China Normal University, came to address. Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Huazhong Agricultural University, Central China Normal University, Hubei Engineering University and other major universities in Hubei Province all sent representatives to the final.
At the beginning of the competition, our vice-dean of the school of sociology Wan Rende hosted the competition and welcomed the distinguished guests, professors, teachers and students from all over Hubei Province. The first session of the competition was delivered by Professor Huang Xiaomei. She congratulated Central China Normal University on the finals as scheduled. She also pointed out that the participation in this competition of social work practice case had 23 units of 70 teams. They had the characters of strong specialty and a wide range of knowledge, which reflects the province's social work in a good development. And she gave a brief introduction to the competition. Subsequently, Professor Tan Mingfang on behalf of the Hubei Provincial Social Association delivered a speech. He extended his heartfelt gratitude to the organizers, the teams and the staff, and wished the 30 teams which stand out in the preliminary round get a good mark and had good prospects for the development of the sociology.
The dean of the school of sociology Darrell Irwin introduced the basic rules of the competition in a humorous style mixed Chinese and English. Seven experts acted as the final judges. They were Professor Chi from Wuhan University, Professor Shi Renbing from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Wan Jianghong from Huazhong Agricultural University, Professor Xia Jianping, the dean of the school of Politics and Laws of Hubei Engineering University, Professor Yang Shengyong from Central China Normal University, Xu Changhong, the deputy director of Hubei Provincial Civil Affairs Department of grass-roots political power and community construction, and Sun Guowu, the director of Wuhan Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau of grassroots power and community construction.
The first participant is Yao Liuliu from Wuhan Boya social work service center. She showed the theme is”’ no problem ’him”. The project aims to raise the resilience of adolescents and their families in distress to assist and accompany adolescents and their families in overcoming difficulties. Facing the teacher's constant questioning, the participant on the stage responded calmly, providing a good example for this competition. Followed by the team of Wuhan Sunshine Social Work Center, they bring the work involved in primary school students’ attention training - poor children left behind social work services. This project takes a poor primary school in Huangmei County of Huanggang City as the real background, focuses on the work of improving the students' concentration, and uses a way that combines the game and training to achieve good results in practice.
The most impressive participant was the Community Volunteer Association of Wuchang District. They brought to the "rain after the rainbow, gorgeous white sand" as the theme of the Baishazhou Street settlements "social workers + volunteers" involved in the project after the disaster. They focused on the post-disaster reconstruction of Wuhan floods in July, with physiological adaptation, child care, emotional counseling, post-disaster reconstruction as a service framework for Wuhan flood disaster intervention work has provided good help.
The competition was advanced in a warm quiz. Li Guohui and Zhang Chi from our institute showed the group activities with the theme of "Life is fragrant". Their projects were based on the fact that the seriously aging in our country. They were analyzed by observation, assessment scale, and questionnaire interview and so on. And then they carry on the work. To a certain extent, the work enriches the spiritual life of the elderly.
The following participants also brought a variety of cases such as children's social help, mother's child crisis intervention, and social support for left-behind children, crises involving domestic violence cases, youths with disabilities and other forms of content services and so on. Among them, Yuan Ling, from Wuhan University, won the praise due to her case "Friendship of the boat steady". She focused on the problems of interpersonal problems in children left to take a series of intervention measures to effectively teach children to empathy to understand others, clearly express their feelings, more respect and tolerance of friends.
Rong Min from Hubei Engineering University reported to the judges and the audience his case “love full of Xiaogan”. He and his companions used social psychology therapy, family therapy, and theory of people in the situation to improve the relationship between the families which help him win the community identity and achieve the goal of improving the social support system for small-scale society.
The audience put forward their own experience and feeling as a social worker according to the relevant case : the difference between social work and public service activities, the support of social workers is responsibility and professional values, and the general public take compassion and sympathy as the driving force. Social work practice should distinguish the difference between them, and focus on culturing the professional ethics and values of professional social worker.
The competition ended in the free discussion and academic inclusive atmosphere. After the judges announced the final decision, the predecessors of social work in Hubei Province gave awards to those who won the first, second and third prizes. We believe that the Hubei province social work practice case competition which is held year to year can make social work in people's lives in Hubei province to achieve more value of social workers, win the attention and support of the community, and promote social governance innovation in Hubei Province and the construction of Harmonious Society.
